So what I notice tho is with each passing year we have more and more “available” possible customers as the population climbs so why wouldn’t the dynamic obsolescence be trending towards a more balanced point where we have longer life on items just due to the fact more can be sold? Maybe just cause they don’t have to? Or is there maybe a better explanation

Planned Obsolescence has been built into everything manufactured since we crawled of caves after the stone age. Why does this come as such a surprise to some of you? The basis of every world economy depends on replacement of everyday items on a regular basis. The only thing that separates replacement of all items manufactured in the world is based on the value of the item itself. For instance, you certainly wouldn't replace a high dollar item such as an automobile or house as you would replace a pair of socks or running shoes would you? Things wear out, things are no longer trendy, things break and would cost more to repair than replace etc. In the USA simply put, "progress is our most important product". Things that were viewed as the pinnacle of success 200, 100, 50 years ago, that same mindset no longer applies today. We have become a throwaway society, usually based on appearance rather than function.

This is just about every single multinational corporation. All of them. Tesla invented the immortal carbon cathode bulb which Lux had stolen. The formation of the cartel also lines up with Teslas Long Island plant being broken into with thousands of bulbs and valves being stolen. Everything... Car tyres, even GPUs and capacitors all have designed obsolescence OR are primitive tech so that we can be bled lines of tech over decades, thus allowing tech giants to leech consumer products. There have been so few leaps in consumer computing recently that it's so obvious that grid alignment, even processors as we use them are completely obsolete. The entire progression of our species is held back just to line the pockets of a very select few. Worst part; they know it and are proud of it.

I recon I have a great reputation for always questioning and exploring new ideas. And despite many people trying, none have been able to show how Einsteins quack theories can possibly be correct. So the real quacks are the mainstream pseudo scientists. So I have sold reasons why I cant accept Einstein, and I find not a single reason to believe otherwise. So go ahead and believe that "things shrink because someone moving differently is watching it pass by". That is Relativity in a nut shell. It does not sound very reasonable does it?

@xiao99 xiao99 This literal video is about how conspiracies can be real. But you reveal you're not one of those when you immediately started screeching classic conspiracy quack garbage. The reason you have a bad reputation is because you EARNED that reputation. It isn't the people that recognize that conspiracies exist and seriously try to determine the truth, it's the quacks that despite having no good reason to believe what they do, believe it anyway. For example, basically the entirety of Moon landing denialism can be traced back to one con artist 50 years ago blatantly lying to people to make money off them. We went to the Moon. At this point, the only conspiracy is that Moon landing denialist conmen keep passing around these bogus ideas to get money and attention out of the uneducated and mentally unwell. That's one prominent example, but it's the association with these sorts that gives you your bad reputation, and your general ignorance, elitism, and paranoid ramblings.

cars are intentionally getting shorter life spans too. 20 years ago, engines and auto transmissions could run 200-300k miles before breaking down. now they last 80-100k miles and die. repairs are also getting more expensive, so there is less incentive to repair, forcing you to instead buy a new car

I'd like to know where these long-life LED bulbs can be purchased. Almost six years ago, we built a house that had over 100 bulbs throughout it. Since that time we have replaced over 100 bulbs. I know because I have been keeping a record of them in a spreadsheet. The average lifespan of all the bulbs is about 1300 days. I can't speak to the number of hours since some bulbs are used heavily while others are only used occasionally.

The LED lamps doesn't last as much as they should, they send too much current to the LED so they get hot enough to last a few months and not die in a few hours. Also they are using the same size for 7W than for 12W or even 15W lamps, so the more powerful lamps must to dissipate more heat with the same heatsink of a less powerful lamp Look for videos about Dubai Lamps.

So if you can work for 50 years and you earn 50 000/year they will maximum barrow you 2,5 miljon. The most ironi about this is also that the money you barrow is from your own stash of cash. The banks are making money out of the rent you need to pay back over time. I retrofitted a newly built house with LED bulbs shortly after I purchased it in late 2018. 32 bulbs in total for the interior of the house. We don't leave our lights on 24 hours a day. I have had to replace over a dozen bulbs in the less than 2 1/2 years since they were purchased. The store that sold the bulbs (Home Depot Canada) doesn't replace them if they burn out. They refer you to the manufacturer. The company that manufactures the bulbs (ECOSMART) makes it so difficult to get replacement bulbs that it costs more to replace the bulb than to just buy a new one (expired contact information, shipping costs of failed bulbs and awaiting replacement bulbs to arrive if you can get them to agree to replace them). These bulbs have a five year warranty "from date of purchase" regardless of when you actually connect the bulb to AC. It isn't the LED's that burn out or fail, it's the internal electronics to control the LED's and stepdown the voltage from 110 VAC to LED operating voltage. Luckily the highest bulbs in my house haven't burnt out but I dread the day that I'll have to climb my 12 foot ladder and with an extension pole replace the bulbs in my 25 foot high ceiling. By the way, the bulbs started to fail after 6 months. Add to that the fact that without the heat loss of incandescent bulbs it costs more to heat your house. LED bulbs do however use less electricity and if they did last even the 5 years under warranty you'd save money on your electrical bill. Oh, and by the way, I tend to drive my vehicles 10 years plus. My GMC truck is from 2013 (trailer tow equipped) and my SUV is a 1985 Toyota 4 Runner.

It's not technically a conspiracy because they didn't break the law... but still an immoral sort of legal crime. It is thought by some, that it was the cotton magnates who diabolized cannabis : because the fiber was not only cheaper, but lasted 10 times longer... so with the help of various media produced the scare propaganda film "reefer madness" using the xenophopic mexican term... to make it illegal and has been an effective tool to target certain groups of people and enrich the legal system with something profitable to do. Now it is to be wondered... are these new virus strains and vaccinations a eugenics dream of elites for a planned human obsolescence in the name of population control? It sounds like science fiction, but is it? After all, if we are to fall for (thus belittle ourselves as americans & as human beings) "critical race theory" or the "global warming" scam, what does that really suggest other than that populations are a danger to the earth : thus the solution is to "reduce population". After the 20th century where more people died of their own governments control producing genocide (Pol Pot, Castro, Lenin, Mao, Hitler, two million Armenians, a million in Rwanda and so on...), not to mention their own governments sending people into war : does this take such a great stretch of the imagination? Sadly not. What, for example, good does it do a technocrat like Bill Gates to buy up such a huge share of american farm land as he is presently doing, but to take it away from the actual farmers who know how to take care of the land? Trump was proposing legislation to help small farms stay in the families by not taxing them… it is in fact idiotic to tax those who provide our food ! What makes them weak, weakens our food chain. Maybe, in light of "fake food" (GMO's which again the elites OWN and drench corporate fast fun easy shelf life foods with, but would never eat themselves), the weakening of humanity is exactly the method to systemic sustainable power.

Other more detrimental impacts include Ford Motors. They designed and produced a few hundred electric cars back in the sixties. They could reach speeds of 60mph and run for miles before recharging but they soon realised they were not profitable as they would last longer and the impact on oil would be catastrophic. We are such a greedy duplicitous species.

How are you going to organise jobs for 8 billion people on the planet if they all produce durable goods? It’s a question I’ve been trying to answer for a few years now and my unfortunate conclusion is that we need a consumption society if we want to support 8 billion people in the economy that we have! Sorry to say but the only way to start producing more durable is to reduce the amount of people on the planet... You can’t have on without the other it seems! I wish I was wrong... And what happens when a market is saturated? Do we need manufacturers to take back the products they did not sell and recycle them?

Před 2 dny
seigeengine
seigeengine

@Gilles van Zeebroeck Easy, you adapt the system to the technology, and guarantee the basic needs of every person are met regardless of employment. The simplest strat is called a Universal Basic Income (UBI), where everyone is paid a certain amount by the government, and, at this point, it's been tested several times to great results.

Před 13 hodinami
Gilles van Zeebroeck
Gilles van Zeebroeck

@seigeengine I fully agree with the fact that jobs by themselves are not the goal of existence. But you need to determine what durability is and to me it simply means that stuff works longer and that the resources needed for fabrication eventually find their way back into the production cycle of the next “batch” of products. That is if we don’t want to exhaust our resources which can cause all kinds of ecological and even economical problems. It basically dwindles down to buying less stuff but the stuff you buy is of excellent quality! E.g. Imagine your personal transportation vehicle to last you 20 years with ease... But the problem with that as I see it is when stuff works longer you re-sell less of that product, if you eventually sell less products you need less people and people eventually need a job/income to buy the stuff those companies produce. So how do you keep this balance where 8 billion people can be financially supported by the labour they provide (jobs) but on the other hand everything that is being produced remains in use a lot longer? I fear a lot of people will become jobless if we decide to go « full durable » tomorrow so I’m afraid were stuck with this relentless consumption society that provides us all with a job allowing us to continue to support this crazy mechanism and I’m not sure that’s a good thing! Unless we can seriously reduce the amount of people on the planet but good luck with that!

Před 20 hodinami
seigeengine
seigeengine

The correct answer is don't do that because that's a stupid question to begin with. First of all, only about 45% of the global population works. Second of all, jobs are not the goal of existence. If fewer people can produce the same goods, then the rest don't need to work at all, because all the work needed to satisfy their needs is still being done.

there's a lot of things missing from this video, you did not have any explanation why it's happening and how we can change that and why your first assumption turned out to be wrong

My grandfather purchased an Emerson table top fan in 1923. My family has been using it virtually every year since. It has many many thousands of hours on it and it still works fine. We use it for extended periods every day of every summer. That's 98 years of heavy use. Today's table fans might last two years and they're dead.

Even led lightbulbs are intentionally obsolescent. You need luck to get the ones that are not. I got few. And there were some which were CLEARLY obsolescent. (like 9 out of 9 led bulbs died within 1-2 years and I have ones that are working like over 10 years now)

are there more documented examples of cartels organizing to create planned obsolescence and similar stuff? please point me to them.

My only car is obsolete now, no longer made or supported... it's 15 years old, looks like new and has only around 50k miles (haven't looked at the odometer for awhile). It doesn't have all the tech or power of newer vehicles but I still love driving it and it still turns heads.

That bit at the end about the LED light bulb. Just remember, about 20 years ago, they were pushing those spiral florescent bulbs. Then, about 10 years ago, that's when LEDs started becoming popular, using a fraction of the power of equivalent florescents and lasting 3 to 5 times as long. What do you want to bet that, in 5 years, we'll see a more efficient and longer-lasting light source that will outshine LEDs?

oh, so you are saying that big and millionaire companies made an agreement prioritizing profits even though said agreement brought no benefits to consumers or the environment? can you expect ANYTHING else besides that from millionaire companies and their owners?
